The tradition of nurturing the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to teaching at the University of Novi Sad originates from the early nineties of the 20th century when, following world trends, a need was recognized to create such study programmes as well as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific research activities. The first multidisciplinary programme, for the master studies of that time, was implemented at the University within the framework of the TEMPUS Centre in the field of environmental protection engineering in the academic year 1992/1993. With the development of educational and scientific activities and by organizing new interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary study programmes, the TEMPUS Centre soon became the Centre for University Studies, and later the Centre for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies and Developmental Research (CIMSI). The University Statute in 2002 stipulated a new organization of educational and scientific activities and required the foundation of separate university centres for each of the study programmes offered. All centres further constituted the Association of Centres for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies and Research (ACIMSI), forming a separate educational and scientific organizational unit. Over the period of its existence, ACIMSI encompassed twelve interdisciplinary centres within which a large number of study programmes were implemented for almost three decades for previous master, master, specialist and doctoral studies, which included the following: Centre for Advanced European Studies and Research; Centre for Sustainable Development and Environment; Centre for Medical Physics and Medical Engineering; Centre for Management in Education; Centre for Sports Management; Centre for Meteorology and Environmental Modelling; Centre for Gender Studies; Centre for Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy; Centre for Techniques and Management in Applied Arts; Centre for Applied Studies in Conflict Transformation; Centre for Research and Development of Electronic Administration Technologies and Centre for Multidisciplinary Forensic Studies “Dr. Archibald Reiss”.
In addition, the nurturing of interdisciplinarity continued in other higher education units at the University: the UNESCO Chair for Entrepreneurial Studies, established in 2006, the University Centre for Applied Statistics and the University Centre for Educational Development, established in 2010 and the University Centre for Strategic and Advanced Studies, established in 2016.
In accordance with the Decision of the Senate of the University of Novi Sad as of 23rd December 2019, all aforementioned centres were abolished and a single University Centre for Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies and Research – UCIMSI was founded. It implements master, specialist and doctoral academic studies, and is involved in the writing of students’ final papers and doctoral dissertations in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific and artistic fields of study. Moreover, the University can organize schools, professional trainings, seminars and special forms of study within the Centre, as well as conduct scientific and artistic activities in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific and artistic fields of study. The aim of establishing a single University Centre, instead of a large number of individual university centres that existed in the past, is to enhance the organizational structure, reconcile procedures and rules of operations, enable the Centre to be more adaptable to contemporary educational and research requirements and more functional in its activities.
