OUR GUEST: PROFESSOR MAURO BUSSANI

One of the most famous professors of comparative law in the world and head of at the moment the largest research project in Europe in the field of legal sciences - The Common Core of European Private law, Professor Mauro Bussani, PhD. stayed at the University of Novi Sad from 23 to 25 April 2016.

In the hall of the Faculty of Law on 25 April Professor Busani held a lecture on the topic: ‘The Common Core of European Private Law’ Project: Twenty Years After. An Endless Beginning.

Biography

Mauro Bussani is Professor of Comparative Law at the University of Trieste and Adjunct Professor at the University of Macao, S.A.R. of the People's Republic of China. He is Director of the Joint Ph.D. Program in Law, at the University of Udine and Trieste, Member of the ‘Group of Experts of Evaluation – Law’, at the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutes, and Vice-President of the Council of Administration of the United World College of the Adriatic (Duino, Italy).

He has been Visiting Professor in the US, Brazil, Peru, France, Switzerland, the UK, Portugal, Serbia, Hungary, Israel, and China. He is titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law and of the Société de législation comparée (France). He sits on the councils of a number of scientific academies/institutions, including the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law (Switzerland), the Master of Laws in Cross-Cultural Business Practice (University of Fribourg, Universiy of Berne, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Switzerland), the Fondation pour le droit continental (France), the Interdisciplinary Association of Comparative and Private International Law (Austria).

He is co-editor of the Cambridge University Press series 'The Common Core of European Private Law' and of the Editoriale Scientifica series 'Tradizioni, traduzioni: il diritto allo specchio'. He is member of the editorial board of many law reviews such as the American Journal of Comparative Law, the Tulane Law Review, the Journal of European Tort Law, the Journal of Comparative Law in Africa, the Zbornik Pravnog Fakulteta u Zagrebu.

His principal publications include 26 books (of which 14 are edited), and more than 130 essays, in Italian, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, and Korean.

About the project

‘The Common Core of European Private Law’ project, a scholarly initiative launched in 1994 by Professors Mauro Bussani and Ugo Mattei, involves more than two hundred scholars coming from the EU, Israel, US, Canada, and China.

The project seeks to unearth the “common core” of European private law, i.e. what is common and what is not across European private laws. The final goal is to provide a reliable ‘map’ of the laws existing in Europe in the three main areas of property, contract, and tort. The ‘Common Core’ methodology, based on the so-called factual approach and on the dissociation of legal formants, enables those who apply it to identify what is historically contingent and what is deeply rooted in a national legal system’s culture.

The research carried out under the Common Core flag is published in a dedicated and peer-reviewed series by Cambridge University Press under the direction of Professor Bussani and Mattei. Up to now, the series comprises sixteen volumes, and many others are in preparation.
