RECTOR’S WINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOVI SAD PROCLAIMED THE BEST AT THE INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WINE COMPETITION IN MARIBOR

The Rector’s wine of the University of Novi Sad was proclaimed the best in the category of red wines at the International University Wine Competition, held on 19th and 20th September at the University of Maribor, in the respective city in Slovenia with a long-established wine tradition, which is also widely known for the oldest grapevine in the world growing on its bank of the Drava River.

 

A total of 34 wines belonging to 11 universities from 10 countries were judged at the competition. The decision was reached by an international judging panel composed of 17 eminent experts from several countries.

ABOUT UNIVERSITY WINES

University wines are considered to be representative trademarks of academic communities. They are traditionally divided into Dean’s and Rector’s wines. The former wines are a part of the tradition of individual faculties, whereas the latter ones are trademarks of a university as a whole. A Rector is the first among equals (primus inter pares). Therefore, it is believed that a Rector’s wine is the best wine belonging to a certain university community.

Rector’s wines are a rarity and a privilege of an academic community as relatively few universities worldwide have their own vineyards, wineries and grapes of sufficiently high quality.

RECTOR’S WINE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOVI SAD

The Senate of the University of Novi Sad, at its 11th session held on 2nd June 2016, reached the decision, at the Rector’s proposal, on establishing the Rector’s wine and it was decided to assign this trademark to wine Probus, produced by the Department of Fruit Growing, Viticulture, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture of the Faculty of Agriculture, at the experimental farm in Sremski Karlovci.

Wine Probus is made from a grape variety bearing the same name, produced by the team of Professor Dragi Milisavljević, PhD, by the breeding of Skadarka and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wine was named after Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus.

ABOUT EMPEROR PROBUS

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus was born in 232 in Sirmium and became Emperor when he was 44 years old. He is considered to be the progenitor of the grape crop in Srem and the surrounding areas, given that he introduced the growing of a new agricultural crop, i.e. grapevine, on the said territory, whose first vine stocks were planted on the Alma Mons hill in Sirmium of that time.
