10th JUBILEE OF THE EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP

The 10^th European Universities Rowing Championship will be held from 13th to 16th July 2017 in Subotica, on Lake Palić. The participation of more than 500 students from 50 to 80 universities and a total of 22 countries is expected in the major European universities sports championship.

The 2017 European Universities Rowing Championship, which is held under the auspices of the European University Sports Association (EUSA), is jointly organized by the rowing clubs ʻ Danubius 1885ʼ from Novi Sad and ʻPalićʼ from Subotica, in cooperation with the University of Novi Sad, the University Sports Federation of Serbia (USSS), the Serbian Rowing Federation (VSS) and the Vojvodina Rowing Association (VSV), with the support from the Provincial Secretariat for Sports and Youth and the City of Subotica.

The championship will be organized on Palić for the first time, which is the natural lake in the surrounding area of Subotica and a well-known tourist attraction with a long-standing tradition of holding rowing competitions. Prior to the European championship, the traditional International Rowing Regatta ʻVojvodina Openʼ, bringing together several hundreds of the best competitors from rowing clubs in the region each year (Serbia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, FYROM, Greece and Turkey), will take place at the beginning of July 2017 at the same location. The rowing club ʻPalićʼ has been hosting ʻVojvodina Openʼ for more than 50 years, whereas the organizers of the regatta are the Serbian Rowing Federation and the Vojvodina Rowing Association.

The University of Novi Sad has a rich sporting tradition. Owing to many years of cultivation and development of different sports disciplines, the students of the University of Novi Sad achieve remarkable results at domestic and international sports competitions. Among these students are also the students from the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education Nebojša Grujić and Milica Starović. Nebojša Grujić won the first place at the K2-200 European Canoe Sprint and Paracanoeing Championship in 2016, as well as the second place at the K2-200 World Cup, whereas Milica Starović won the first place at the K2-1000m European Canoeing Championship in 2016. Both of them were members of the Olympic Team of Serbia and participated in the 23rd Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The Faculty of Sport and Physical Education is one of 14 faculties constituting the University of Novi Sad which has several decades of experience in the higher education, professional, scientific and research work in the field of sports and physical education.
