OUR GUEST: CÉDRIC VILLANI, WINNER OF THE FIELDS MEDAL

The renowned mathematician and winner of the Fields Medal Cédric Villani held a popular science lecture entitled ʻHow Ideas are Bornʼ at the amphitheatre of the Central University Building of the University of Novi Sad on April 6, 2017.

Professor Cédric Villani is the Director of the prestigious Henri Poincaré Institute at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. He is the author of several books whose aim is the popularization of science, such as the one called Théorème vivant(2012), which is translated into Serbian.

As part of his tour on the Balkans, Cédric Villani stayed for two days in Novi Sad, Belgrade and Niš so as to stimulate interest in science and share his affinity for mathematics, relying on his personal journey, both in his scientific and artistic career, which led him to the Fields Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in the world of science and mathematics.

Summary of the lecture

An idea, coming into a researcher’s, an engineer’s or an inventor’s mind, can change the world slightly or considerably. Encouraging the birth of ideas poses a true challenge in teaching, especially in the field of research. However, an idea is not born so easily. In order for an idea to blossom, it needs ingredients and a fertile ground!
