The Nuclear Security Coordinator (Forensics) in the Division of Nuclear Security of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr. David Kenneth Smith visited the University of Novi Sad March 13, 2019. The guest was welcomed by the Rector of the University of Novi Sad Prof. Dr. Dejan Jakšić and the Vice-Rector for Education Prof. Dr. Sanja Podunavac-Kuzmanović. The meeting in the Rector's Office was also attended by Dr. Jovana Nikolov, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences (Chair of Nuclear Physics), in charge of one of the new IAEA Coordinated Research Project in the field of Nuclear Forensics, and Dr. Slobodan Gadžurić, Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and the Coordinator of the University Association of Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies and Research and Head of the University Centre for Multidisciplinary Forensic Studies “Dr Arčibald Rajs” and coordinator of interdisciplinary master academic study programme in Forensics.
The meeting was an occasion to present educational and research activities in the field of nuclear safety and nuclear security, at the University of Novi Sad, and especially at the Faculty of Sciences. The support of IAEA to this field of study and research at the University bears a great importance. More intensive cooperation with the Agency has been established within the new approved IAEA Coordinated Research Project, led by Prof. Dr. Jovana Nikolov from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Novi Sad.
The International Atomic Energy Agency is an international organization with the headquarters in Vienna, Austria, established by the United Nations as an autonomous organization in 1957. It is an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide. The Agency encourages and assists research on atomic energy and development, practical use and applications of atomic energy for peaceful purposes throughout the world. IAEA Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) bring together research institutions from developing and developed Member States to collaborate on research projects of common interest. The Republic of Serbia is among IAEA Member States. The cooperation with the Agency is officially run by the Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate that coordinates and synchronizes the nomination and communication activities in both directions.
